After exploring Scottsbluff we drove on to Rapid City.
The drive was once again long and straight. We stopped on the way for a bite to eat in a very quiet place called Alliance. We found a subway and were the only customers.
After lunch we carried on to Rapid City. Because we spent most of the morning exploring, we didn't get there until after 5pm and promptly needed a bit of a rest.
We discovered there was a 'lighting up' ceremony at Mount Rushmore so decided to visit that same evening. It was worth going, although busy. There was a presentation by a young ranger and also a film all about Rushmore before the lights went up. It was very busy, however.
Rushmore at night
After an evening in the hotel bar with a bite of food, we were ready for bed.
The next day (Sunday) we went out to explore the area and set off for Crazy Horse. We explored the memorial and learned all about the person responsible for starting the whole project. It's going to take many more decades of hard work. After lunch at Crazy Horse we set off for Deadwood and Sturgis. The scenery around this area is amazing and we didn't realise how much there is to see and do in the Black Hills of South Dakota. An added interest is the number of bikers, particularly Harley bikers who travel in the area. There may have been more due to the Labor Day weekend holiday on the Monday.
After an interesting day of sight seeing and driving, we had a few drinks in the Sanfords locally and had a small amount to eat at the bar before retiring for the night.
We very much enjoyed our stay in Rapid City and would recommend the hotel too.
